</header><strong>Summary</strong>: in this tutorial, you will learn how to use the Oracle <code>SHUTDOWN</code> statement to shut down the Oracle Database.<br />
<h2>
TL;DR</h2>
Use the <code>SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE</code> command to shut down the Oracle Database gracefully:
<br />
<pre class="wp-block-code code-badge-pre"><div class="code-badge">
<div title="Copy to clipboard">
</div>
</div>
<code class="hljs language-sql">SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE
</code></pre>
<h2>
Introduction to the Oracle <code>SHUTDOWN</code> statement</h2>
To shut down a currently running Oracle Database instance, you use the <code>SHUTDOWN</code> command as follows:<br />
<pre class="wp-block-code code-badge-pre"><div class="code-badge">
</div>
<code class="hljs language-sql">SHUTDOWN [ABORT | IMMEDIATE | NORMAL | TRANSACTIONAL [LOCAL]]
</code></pre>
Let’s examine each option of the <code>SHUTDOWN</code> command.<br />
<h3>
<code>SHUTDOWN NORMAL</code></h3>
The <code>SHUTDOWN NORMAL</code>
option waits for the current users to disconnect from the database
before shutting down the database. The database instance will not accept
any further database connection. The <code>SHUTDOWN NORMAL</code> does not require an instance recovery on the next <a href="https://www.oracletutorial.com/oracle-administration/oracle-startup/">database startup</a>.<br />
The <code>NORMAL</code> is the default option if you don’t explicitly specify any option. Therefore <code>SHUTDOWN</code> and <code>SHUTDOWN NORMAL</code> commands have the same effect.<br />
The <code>SHUTDOWN</code> or <code>SHUTDOWN NORMAL</code>
is not really practical because you practically cannot wait for all
users to come back to their desks and disconnect from the database.<br />
<h3>
<code>SHUTDOWN TRANSACTIONAL</code></h3>
The <code>SHUTDOWN TRANSACTIONAL</code>
waits for all uncommitted transactions to complete before shutting down
the database instance. This saves the work for all users without
requesting them to log off.<br />
The database instance also does not accept any new transaction after a <code>SHUTDOWN TRANSACTIONAL</code>
. When completing all transactions, the database instance disconnects
all the currently connected users from the database and shuts down.<br />
The <code>SHUTDOWN TRANSACTIONAL</code> does not require any instance recovery procedure on the next <a href="https://www.oracletutorial.com/oracle-administration/oracle-startup/">database startup</a>.<br />
The optional <code>LOCAL</code>
mode waits for only local transactions to complete, not all the
transactions. Then it shuts down local instance. This option is useful
in some cases e.g., a scheduled outage maintenance.<br />
<h3>
<code>SHUTDOWN ABORT</code></h3>
The <code>SHUTDOWN ABORT</code> is not recommended and only used on some occasions. The <code>SHUTDOWN ABORT</code>
has a similar effect as you unplug the power of the server. The
database will be in an inconsistent state. Therefore, you should never
use the <code>SHUTDOWN ABORT</code> command before backing up the database. If you try to do so, you may not be able to recover the backup.<br />
It is recommended to use the <code>SHUTDOWN ABORT</code>
only when you want to shut down the database instantaneously. For
example, if you know a power shutdown is going to happen in a minute or
you experience some problems when <a href="https://www.oracletutorial.com/oracle-administration/oracle-startup/">starting up a database instance</a>.<br />
The <code>SHUTDOWN ABORT</code>
proceeds with the fastest possible shutdown of the database. However,
it requires instance recovery on the next database startup.<br />
<h3>
<code>SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE</code></h3>
The <code>SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE</code> is the most common and practical way to shut down the Oracle database.<br />
The <code>SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE</code> does not wait for the current users to disconnect from the database or current transactions to complete.<br />
During the <code>SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE</code>,
all the connected sessions are disconnected immediately, all
uncommitted transactions are rolled back, and the database completely
shuts down.<br />
After issuing the <code>SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE</code> statement, the database will not accept any new connection. The statement will also close and dismount the database.<br />
Unlike the <code>SHUTDOWN ABORT</code> option, the <code>SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE</code> option does not require an instance recovery on the next database startup.<br />
The following table illustrates the differences between the shutdown modes:<br />
<figure class="wp-block-table"><table><thead>
<tr><th>Shutdown Modes</th><th>A</th><th>I</th><th>T</th><th>N</th></tr>
</thead><tbody>
<tr><td>Allow new connection</td><td>No</td><td>No</td><td>No</td><td>No</td></tr>
<tr><td>Wait until all current sessions end</td><td>No</td><td>No</td><td>No</td><td>Yes</td></tr>
<tr><td>Wait until all current transactions end</td><td>No</td><td>No</td><td>Yes</td><td>Yes</td></tr>
<tr><td>Force a checkpoint and close files</td><td>No</td><td>Yes</td><td>Yes</td><td>Yes</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
</figure>Shutdown Modes:<br />
<ul>
<li>A = <code>ABORT</code></li>
<li>I = <code>IMMEDIATE</code></li>
<li>T = <code>TRANSACTIONAL</code></li>
<li>N = <code>NORMAL</code></li>
</ul>
<h3>
Notes</h3>
To issue the <code>SHUTDOWN</code> statement, you must connect to the database as <code>SYSDBA</code>, <code>SYSOPER</code>, <code>SYSBACKUP</code>, or <code>SYSDG</code>. If the current database is a pluggable database, the <code>SHUTDOWN</code>
statement will close the pluggable database only. The consolidated
instance will continue to run. On the other hand, if the current
database is a CDB, the <code>SHUTDOWN</code> statement will close the CDB instance.<br />
<h2>
Oracle <code>SHUTDOWN</code> statement example</h2>
First, launch SQL*Plus:<br />
<pre class="wp-block-code code-badge-pre"><div class="code-badge">
<code class="hljs language-sql">> sqlplus
</code></div>
</pre>
Second, log in to the Oracle database using the <code>SYS</code> user:<br />
<pre class="wp-block-code code-badge-pre"><code class="hljs language-sql"> </code></pre>
<pre class="wp-block-code code-badge-pre"><code class="hljs language-sql">Enter user-name: sys as sysdba
Enter password: <sys_password>
</code></pre>
Third, check the current status of the Oracle instance:<br />
<pre class="wp-block-code code-badge-pre"><div class="code-badge">
</div>
<code class="hljs language-sql">SQL> <span class="hljs-keyword">select</span> instance_name, <span class="hljs-keyword">status</span> <span class="hljs-keyword">from</span> v$<span class="hljs-keyword">instance</span>;
</code></pre>
Here is the output:<br />
<pre class="wp-block-code code-badge-pre"><div class="code-badge">
</div>
<code class="hljs language-sql">INSTANCE_NAME STATUS
<span class="hljs-comment">---------------- ------------</span>
orcl OPEN
</code></pre>
Fourth, issue the <code>SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE</code> command:<br />
<pre class="wp-block-code code-badge-pre"><div class="code-badge">
</div>
<code class="hljs language-sql">SQL> shutdown immediate
Database closed.
Database dismounted.
ORACLE instance shut down.
</code></pre>
In this tutorial, you have learned how to use the Oracle <code>SHUTDOWN</code> statement to shut down the Oracle Database.</div>

activities that support operations, management and decision making.<span style="color: windowtext; text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;"></span>
In a very broad sense, the term <i>information system</i> is frequently used to
refer to the interaction between people, processes, data and technology. In
this sense, the term is used to refer not only to the <span style="color: windowtext; text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;">information and communication
technology</span> (ICT) that an organization uses, but also to the way in
which people interact with this technology in support of business processes. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
Some make a clear
distinction between information systems, computer systems, and business
processes. Information systems typically include an ICT component but are not
purely concerned with ICT, focusing instead on the end use of information
technology. Information systems are also different from business processes.
Information systems help to control the performance of business processes. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
Alter argues for an
information system as a special type of work system. A work system is a system
in which humans and/or machines perform work using resources to produce
specific products and/or services for customers. An information system is a
work system whose activities are devoted to processing (capturing,
transmitting, storing, retrieving, manipulating and displaying) information. </div>

<span style="background-color: #ffd966;"><span style="color: magenta;"><b>What is MIS?</b></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
MIS or Management
Information System is one of the major types of the computer systems because
this system is the head of all the other systems in keeping and controlling
them. The major constituent of this system are the employees. Managing the
information that is strictly internal for any business and relating it with the
employees and managing their functions in every aspect is the job of this
system, that is done for the faultless performance of a business. This system
is the most important one because of the reason that it helps in making the
major decisions for the business and helps the decision makers in making future
plans as well. And not only for this purpose, has MIS helped the business
people in almost all the operational areas.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="background-color: #f1c232;"><span style="color: magenta;"><b>What is DSS?</b></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
A very important
system for any large organization is the Decision Support System, abbreviated
as DSS. This system, as the name suggests is ideal for making the right
decisions for any business. Decision making is a critical process that involves
considering all the major operations, forecasts, activities, planning and
management of various functions. This system helps the senior management of an
organization to get the required data in no time and process it further to make
rapid, necessary decisions. This system not only helps the managers in making
the decisions, but also in executing them rightfully. Just one major drawback is
observed that is related to the fact that this system is not very good at
handling large amounts of data and consequences.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="background-color: #f1c232;"><span style="color: magenta;"><br />
<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><b>Difference between MIS
and DSS and EIS</b></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
The difference
between the three systems lies in their functions. The main function of MIS is
related to the managing the internal operations and the documents. The DSS
helps employees in making decisions even for the daily tasks. The EIS assists
the senior level managers in making serious decisions that are very important
and critical to make. MIS and the other two systems are still interlinked
because of the fact that MIS holds all the documentations that are used by the
other two. In the same way, DSS and the EIS are similar in a way that both are
focusing on the decision making. The MIS has the feature to be used by the
intellectual group that includes the high level and middle level management, as
compared to that the DSS is the only one among the three that is used at all
the business levels and the information it uses is not only internal but also
the external one. Summarizing, EIS is complicated as compared to the DSS and
MIS.</div>

With simple equipment, it is possible to access innumerable documents about a huge variety of topics, from any place around the world. However, despite the abundance of information, languages very often cause problems. When most of the web pages today are written in few most commonly used languages like English, French, Chinese etc, it becomes difficult for a person with insufficient knowledge of these languages to access and use this tool of communication and information. This has prompted the need to devise means of automatically converting the information from one natural language to another natural language, called Machine Translation. This process needs syntactic and </span><span style="mso-bidi-font-family: TTE2498668t00; mso-fareast-font-family: TTE2498668t00; mso-fareast-language: EN-US;">semantic analysis of both source and target languages. Interlingua based machine translation has received a considerable attention because of economy of translation of effort and also additional attraction of the Interlingua providing a knowledge representation scheme.</span><span style="mso-bidi-font-family: TTE2498668t00; mso-fareast-font-family: TTE2498668t00; mso-fareast-language: EN-US;"></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;"><span style="background-color: #d9d2e9;"><span style="mso-bidi-font-size: 8.5pt;">In this paper we present the computational analysis of the complex case structure of Bengali- a member of the Indo Aryan family of languages- with a view toward interlingua based MT. Bengali is ranked 4</span><i><span style="mso-bidi-font-size: 6.0pt;">th </span></i><span style="mso-bidi-font-size: 8.5pt;">in the list of languages ordered according to the size of the population that speaks the language. Extremely interesting language phenomena involving morphology, case structure, word order and word senses make the processing of Bengali a worthwhile and challenging proposition. A recently proposed scheme called the <i>Universal Networking Language </i>has been used as the Interlingua. The approach is adaptable to other members of the vast Indo Aryan language family. The parallel development of both the analyzer and the generator system leads to an insightful intra-system verification process in place. Our approach is <i>rule based </i>and makes use of authoritative treatises on Bengali Grammar and develop rules for certain Bengali to UNL conversion process. </span><b></b></span></div><br />
